Controlling Your Vata as Autumn Approaches

September 2, 2016 By roy

This week we are going to explore the Dosha, Vata, which represents the fall months. If you think of fall, what do you think of?

The chilly months usually bring to mind tiredness, cold, fatigue, and sluggishness. Do you feel this way all the time or primarily in the fall/early winter season? Do you feel out of control, anxious, have insomnia, or feel cold and have dry skin? Then you may be experiencing some of the side-affects from this season change.  Some suggestions to keep Vata from taking control are to eat sweet and heavy fruits such as bananas and avocados. Eating warm, cooked foods and minimize raw foods will help. Drink warm beverages (including water) and remember to stay calm. Your mother was right when she told you to wear a hat and button your coat!

Another Dosha to mention is Kapha which represents Winter. Winter usually brings to mind cold, damp, heavy, and slow. Can you think of people, or perhaps you, that shares some of these characteristics? In Kapha we may gain weight, become sluggish and a little lazy. We may develop colds and sinus headaches as well. Some suggestions to keep Kapha from taking control are to avoid dairy, iced food and drinks, get plenty of exercise, vary your routine, avoid fatty and oily foods, eat light foods and dry foods.

The best general advice I can give is to take care of yourself based upon the seasons or if you know you are feeling a particular season, follow the general guidelines for that season.  You can also schedule an individual appointment with me, Cindy, if you are interested in finding out what dosha(s) you are are receive more specific suggestions that are tailored to you.  Looking forward to sharing more next week. – Cindy Noren.
